What Is AI Observability?

AI observability is the practice of monitoring AI activity and governance behavior in a central, operational view, tracking measures like evaluation volume, decision outcomes, latency, model usage, and cost, rather than leaving that visibility scattered across individual applications. It gives teams a real-time picture of how AI systems and the controls around them are actually performing.

Why It Matters

Without observability, both risk and engineering teams are effectively blind to their own AI footprint. A compliance team can't see where governance controls are actually being triggered or how often; an engineering team can't tell whether the governance layer itself is reliable, fast enough, or operating within acceptable performance thresholds. This split matters in practice, a governance system that quietly introduces unacceptable latency, or one that's blocking far more legitimate activity than expected, can go unnoticed for months without a central view surfacing it.

How It Relates to AI Governance

Observability turns governance from something that happens invisibly inside individual applications into something teams can actively monitor and improve. It typically covers both governance-side metrics (allow/adjust/block distribution, policy triggers) and AI execution metrics (token consumption, latency, spend), giving risk teams and engineering teams the specific view each needs from the same underlying data.
